Maryland Medicare Confusion

Medicare covers many of your health care needs, but without an ancillary plan to cover what Medicare doesn’t, you could be liable for a lot of out of pocket expense, as Medicare only covers about 80% of your expenses. Today’s Medicare is working with private companies approved by Medicare that provide different ways to get your health care and prescription drug coverage in the Medicare program. The Maryland Medicare plan that you choose affects many things like cost, benefits, doctor choice, convenience, and quality.

Your Maryland Medicare Plan Choices

The Original Medicare Plan

This is a fee-for-service plan that covers many health care services and certain drugs. You can go to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. When you get your health care, you use your red, white, and blue Medicare card.

The Original Medicare Plan pays for many health care services and supplies, but it doesn’t pay all of your health care costs. There are costs that you must pay, like coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles. These costs are called “gaps” in Medicare coverage. You might want to consider buying a Maryland Medigap policy to cover these gaps. You can also add prescription drug coverage by joining a Maryland Medicare prescription drug plan.

Maryland Medicare Supplement Plans

Available in all areas. If you have one of these plans, you don’t need a Maryland Medicare advantage plan. Medicare supplements are also known as Medigap policies because they fill the gaps in Original Medicare. Maryland Medigap plans are designed to cover items such as deductibles and coinsurance payments.

Maryland Medicare supplement insurance is regulated by state and federal laws that help consumers compare prices.  Effective June 1, 2010, there are ten standardized Medigap plans. Not all states allow the sale of all supplement policies. Within any one state, all similarly designated plans have the same benefits, regardless of the insurance company. This means that the only thing different between plans from carriers is the price. Therefore, you should use a broker like us, with access to all of the carrier pricing to get the best deal.

The single biggest advantage to Maryland Medicare supplements is freedom of choice with your providers. With a Maryland Medigap Plan F or G, you can visit any doctor in the US.  You may also visit specialists without referrals.

Maryland Medicare Advantage Plans

Available in many areas. If you have one of these plans, you don’t need a Medigap policy. These plans include:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO),
  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO)
  • Private Fee-for-Service Plans
  • Medicare Special Needs Plans
  • Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans (MSA)

These plans may cover more services and have lower out-of-pocket costs than the Original Medicare Plan, but will almost always have higher our of pocket costs that Medigap plans. Some plans cover prescription drugs as well. Maryland Medicare advantage plans can restrict your ability to see certain doctors or go to certain hospitals to get covered services.

Maryland Medicare Prescription Drug Plans

These stand-alone plans add prescription drug coverage to the Original Medicare Plan, some Medicare advantage plans and Maryland Medicare plans.

Let us Find You a Maryland Medicare Plan

In conclusion, there are wide ranges of health care coverage choices that may help pay for some of your health care costs. These health care choices work with the benefits you have from Medicare. The plan you choose now will affect your cost, your  benefits, your doctors and prescriptions.
